Art of Illusion is a free 3D modelling and rendering package written enrirely in Java. This shows how far Java as a platform has evolved with good support for 3D.

Art of Illusion has many features to rival commercial 3D software packages including it's own renderer (ray tracer) and skeletal animation system with inverse kinematics.
