Inkscape - Free SVG based vector drawing package
Inkscape is a free open source vector drawing application. Inkscape has many of the features you would expect to find in other similar software such as Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw. Inkscape makes extensive use of the SVG format , a W3C standard.
Whilst Inkscape is not a full release it is very much usable. It is being used for various types of application such as logos, icons and graphics for websites. Because Inkscape uses SVG this makes the resulting files usable in all sorts of applications. The latest release of Inkscape now also provides output to Adobe's PDF format.
Inkscape has a wide variety of tools to help create drawings. With the use of filters from the SVG specification much more interesting results can be created than standard vector drawing tools. For example a Gaussian Blur effect can be applied.

Inkscape 0.47 has been released. It has taken a years worth of work but the result is a vector drawing application with better performance and some new features. Of notable interest is an autosave feature which will come in very handy.

A pre-release of Inkscape 0.47 is available for testing
It's been a long while since we heard anything about Inkscape but the Inkscape community has not been idle.
The first pre-release of version 0.47 of Inkscape is now available for download and testing. This release is focused on cleaning up the code to help fix bugs and make implementing new features easier. 2Geom is being used in many areas for geometry calculations.

The Inkscape community has released a major version of Inkscape (0.46). One of the biggest features of this release is its ability to create and edit PDF documents.
Other features include performance improvements, ability to dock dialong boxes, a 3D box tool, Live Path Effects which allows you to brushes and various effects on a path. Other colour spaces have been added as well as the standard sRGB. Most of the SVG filters are now implemented with the ability to stack filters for more powerful effects.
A new release of Inkscape available with many new features
Inkscape 0.45 was released on Valentines day.
This new release has many new interesting features including Gaussian blur utilising SVG filters
Other new features include
- Faster rendering
- History allowing for multiple undos and redos
- Improved import/export for Adobe Illustrator, PDF export has many new features, EMF, PS and EPS all improved
- New save a copy command
- Many bugfixes, hundreds in fact
