Free Orion is free turn based game of galactic conquest. Set in a galaxy of your own choosing, the idea is to expand your race from your home planet to distant planets and discover, trade and conqeour other races in a similar vein to Civilisation or FreeCiv.

The game plays similarly to Masters of Orion which set the benchmark for these types of games in the early 1990's.

. It seems like FreeOrion has been in development forever but just recently has become really playable. There are some great features and music. The research tree is quite complex and very detailed.

FreeOrion has playable versions for various Linux distributions as well as Windows and Max OS X
