GRAMPS is a free software project which allows you to create and manage family trees. GAMPS is developed and maintained by geneologists so you can be assured that professional geneology features are included.

There are some quite clever features within GRAMPS such as the ability to store media with an entry, this could be images or videos or even spreadsheets and documents. Also included are full featured reporting tools which allow you to export your reports in a variety of formats such as PDF and OpenOffice Writer. Ancestor and descendant charts can also be exported to a variety of formats including PDF and SVG formats. The SVG option is quite useful as SVG can be then imported into a variety of programs which will read the SVG data without losing detail as you would with a image format. For example the SVG could be loaded into Inkscape where you could make the chart more interesting.
