Platinum Arts Sandbox - Free 3D world creation

 
 

Platinum Arts Sandbox is a free educational tool which puts tools in the hands of children (or adults alike) to create their own 3D worlds.

Platinum Arts Sandbox makes creation of your own worlds really easy by basically pushing and pulling areas of the world using just your mouse. There is no complicated GUI with a million buttons. Just you, your mouse and a few keys from your keyboard.

There is a wide array of features, textures and models available to the user. A basic menu appears when you press the escape key on your keyboard, which incidentally floats in  3D space. This menu contains a few things like loading/saving worlds and changing a few options. But the rest is as simple as painting an area of the landscape with your mouse and then raising it by scrolling your mouse wheel. Terrain can be made more realistic by using the height map tool by again painting the area you wish to affect, press H and then use the mouse scroll wheel to create a bumpy surface. There are also quite a few preset models such as various trees, waving grass and a park bench. These can all be positioned and rotated in your world.

Other features that can be added to the map include teleports, moving platforms, lighting effects, particles, waterfall, water and lava.

When you have got used to the world creation tools there is also more available utilising a scripting language. This gives you more control over your 3D world such as controlling lights.

Platinum Arts Sandbox also allows you to collaborate with other people on the same map. This is a slightly more tricky setup but basic involves the use of a server which all players connect to.

Models can be created to add into your world by using a program such as Blender 3D. Models can be exported in Blender to an MD2, MD3 and MD5 format which can be read by Platinum Arts Sandbox.

A new release of Platinum Arts Sandbox labelled 2.3 has been released.

Platinum Arts Sandbox has been updated to version 2.3 and has a load of great looking new features.

From the Platinum Arts website these new features are

  • New 3D sidescroller Mario like mode! Also there is a seperate RPG project, check the wiki!
  • Hotkeys that make it easier to save games, add materials, and lots more!
  • New in game help section that displays all of the binds/key commands!
  • Snow has been tweaked and updated :) Be sure to check out the new version of house :D
  • Maps now generate cfgs on save! Also many various map tweaks.
  • New main menu theme! To try other themes check out the options menu.
  • Loads of new textures and new player skins.
  • Tons of under the hood bug fixes and features.
  • Thanks to ZKAT of virtualdarkarts.net there is a brand new great looking launcher!

Platinum Arts Sandbox seems to get better and better with each update.

A new release of Platinum Arts Sandbox is now available

Platinum Arts Sandbox Beta 2.2.0 has been released.

This latest version features many new features and improvements such as new maps and quests.

Other additions include the ability to add moving clouds, new characters and and animals, the menus have been improved, easier landscape editing, improved graphical effects for waterfalls, rain, etc and many under the hood improvements

Platinum Arts Sandbox Beta 2.1 has been released with a nice list of new features

A new release of Platinum Arts Sandbox is now available. This release, Beta 2.1, features some great new features:

  • A new map called Village has been added to show of the new features as well as improvements to the existing maps
  • New Player Model called Robochimp!
  • A fish model has been added as well as tweaks to existing models
  • The source has been rewritten in a lot of places including pysics changes
  • Updates to allow the Sandbox to work much smoother on older computers
  • The menu has been updated and introduces easy particle effects editing
  • There are now new textures and skyboxes for more variety.
  • Lots of bugs have been squashed
