FreeCiv - Free Civilisation style turn based strategy game
Availability:
FreeCiv is a turn based empire building strategy game and was inspired by the Civilisation series of games. In FreeCiv you take the role of the leader of your chosen civilisation and the idea is to advance through history acquiring knowledge for building bigger and better buildings or military.
In FreeCiv there are 3 ways to win. You can wipe out all other civilisations, be the frist to reach Alpha Centauri or be the greatest civilisation by the year 2000.
Your civilisation starts in the Bronze Age in year 4000BC and you start with an explorer and some settlers. The settlers are used to found cities. So it's wise to do this as quickly as possible. Once you have founded a city you can then start the process of researching and building more buildings and units.
There are many ways to advance your civilisation and you can also create trade agreements and alliances with other civilisations.
FreeCiv has many units and buildings to help you advance. Military units start really basic with warriors with spears and horsemen and end with stealth bombers and paratroopers. If you are too slow to advance you can find your bronze age units fighting 20th century paratroopers.
FreeCiv can be played against computer opponents on your own computer or you can play against other players on the same computer or over the internet which gives it that extra re-playability factor.
FreeCiv has been an active project for quite some years and is always being updated.
